“You’re so brave.”
That is what a lot of people said when I left my 35-year career.
What some of them were probably thinking was: You absolute nutter. What on earth are you doing?
It doesn’t require bravery once the cost of holding on becomes greater than the cost of letting go. At that point, bravery becomes irrelevant. Some people call it rock bottom. When we get there, the decision has frequently already been made for us.
We tell ourselves it will work out. That we cannot change. That we cannot risk upsetting other people. That we should be grateful for what we have. Meanwhile, we slowly disappear inside lives built around survival and acceptance.
I knew I needed to create space before I could build something different. For me, the question was not: Should I do this? It was: How can I do this? The decision to walk away from a long term career did not come from recklessness or desperation. Nor did it come from seeking the advice, opinion or permission of people who were not standing in my shoes.
It came after I had deliberately dismantled the stories keeping me stuck: that security mattered more than fulfilment; that leaving meant failure; that it was too late to begin again; that I could not afford to leave; and that I needed to know the entire plan before taking the first step. I had allowed fear to become my decision-maker, and I was done resigning myself to survival simply because change felt uncertain.
Whether the turning point is redundancy, retirement, divorce, an empty nest or the realisation that your career no longer fits, or your business no longer lights you up, there is a way through. You can spend years circling it, second-guessing yourself and waiting to feel ready. Or you can move through it with structure, support and far less collateral damage. That's why I created
